"I am Zainab, and 15 years old. I once dreamed of becoming a teacher, standing proudly in front of a classroom, helping children discover the joy of learning. But now, that dream feels more like a distant memory.
I grew up in a small village in Kebbi where life wasn’t easy, but school was my sanctuary. I loved being in class, raising my hand to answer questions, and imagining a future where I could inspire other girls to follow their dreams. My teachers believed in me, and I believed in myself—until everything changed.
One evening, my father sat me down and told me I was to be married. The words hit me like a storm. He explained that my marriage would help ease our family’s financial struggles, that the dowry would bring relief. I was too shocked to speak at first, but then I begged and pleaded. I wanted to stay in school. I wanted to finish my education. But their minds were made up.
The wedding happened quickly. I remember the sound of laughter and celebration all around me, but inside, I felt nothing but fear and sadness. My life was no longer my own. Now, I’m a wife and a mother. My days revolve around household chores and caring for my baby. My books are gone, my classroom is a distant memory, and my dream of becoming a teacher feels like it’s slipping through my fingers. Sometimes, I sit quietly and wonder, What if things had been different?
But even though my circumstances have changed, my passion hasn’t. I still believe in the power of education, and I want to make sure no other girl has to experience what I’ve been through. One day, I hope to become an advocate for education, speaking out for girls who are forced to give up their futures too soon.
I want to encourage families to see the value in educating their daughters, to show them that investing in a girl’s education can transform entire communities. I may not be in school anymore, but I haven’t given up on the dream of creating a brighter future for others.
My story doesn’t have to end here. I’m determined to turn my pain into purpose and to help others find the opportunities that I couldn’t."
